Carry Method

Inside the Waistband (IWB) Carry

The default for everyday concealed carry: the holster sits inside your pants, clipped to the belt, with only the grip above the waistband. It's the best balance of deep concealment and a practical draw most people will find.

What is IWB carry?

Inside the waistband (IWB) carry tucks the holster between your body and your trousers, secured by one or two clips that hook over the belt. The gun rides below the beltline, so a normal untucked — or even tucked — shirt covers it completely.

Because the body absorbs most of the pistol's width, IWB conceals far better than carrying outside the waistband, while still keeping the gun on your belt where the draw is fast and familiar. It works with Kydex, leather, or hybrid holsters and with almost any handgun, which is why it's the most common way to carry concealed.

The trade-off is comfort: there's now a holster pressed against your side. The good news is that nearly all of that is fixable with a proper gun belt, the right ride height, and a holster with a comfortable backer.

Pros and cons of IWB carry

Pros

  • Excellent concealment, even under light clothing
  • Works with most guns, from subcompacts to full-size
  • Fast, intuitive belt draw
  • Huge selection of holsters at every price
  • Can be carried at several positions around the belt

Cons

  • Less comfortable than OWB until it's dialed in
  • Usually needs pants one size larger in the waist
  • Requires a stiff gun belt to carry well
  • Reholstering one-handed takes a quality, rigid holster

Who IWB carry is best for

IWB is the right starting point for most everyday carriers. If you wear an untucked shirt and a belt, want strong concealment without a dedicated wardrobe, and carry a compact or full-size handgun, this is almost certainly your method. It scales from a slim single-stack up to a duty-size pistol depending on your build and clothing.

Tips for carrying IWB well

  • Buy a real gun belt. A reinforced belt is the single biggest comfort and stability upgrade — it stops the holster sagging and digging.
  • Go up one pant size. An extra inch in the waist makes room for the holster and removes most of the pinch.
  • Tune the ride height and cant. Small adjustments change everything about comfort and how well the grip hides.
  • Pick the position for your goal. Behind the hip (4–5 o'clock) hides the grip best; toward the front trades a little concealment for a faster draw — see appendix carry.
  • Choose a holster that stays open. A rigid Kydex shell (or hybrid with a Kydex pocket) lets you reholster safely with one hand.

Not sure IWB is right? Compare it against OWB for comfort, or appendix for draw speed. Our holster buyer's guide walks through the whole decision.

Frequently asked questions

Is IWB carry comfortable for all-day wear?
It can be, with the right setup. A holster with a wide backer or a quality belt that doesn't sag makes a big difference. Most discomfort comes from a cheap belt, a holster riding at the wrong height, or sharp edges — not from IWB itself.
Do I need to buy bigger pants for IWB carry?
Often by one inch in the waist, yes — the holster and gun take up room inside the waistband. Many carriers find going up a single pant size makes IWB far more comfortable.
What's the best position on the belt for IWB?
The 3–4 o'clock (strong-side hip) position is the classic all-rounder. Carrying slightly behind the hip hides the grip better; carrying toward the front (appendix) speeds the draw. See our appendix carry guide for the front-of-hip variation.
Kydex or leather hybrid for IWB?
Kydex is slim, holds its shape for easy one-handed reholstering, and resists sweat. Leather hybrids feel softer against the body. Many carriers prefer Kydex for reliability and a hybrid backer for comfort.
